Transforming Spaces with Young People
The Golden Spine: Working with young people to transform local community spaces
We worked with some inspirational young people from the City of Derby to develop a new, interesting and exciting future for the city's unattractive underpasses which have been crime hotspots for some years.
The brief was, through the creation of art, to make them destinations - places which interest people and make them want to visit, increasing the footfall and making antisocial activity much less likely.
Our role was to explore the issues, develop the ideas and ensure that they were reflected in the artwork. Embracing the heritage of the city and the specific areas the underpasses are situtated in, the young people were keen to see bright, interesting designs which reflected, metaphorically and in reality, the Derwent River which dominates the history and geography of the City.
